Overcoming Isolation and Loneliness
Isolation and loneliness are very common in the elderly and especially amongst those suffering from dementia. Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness and social isolation because they are more likely to experience living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and hearing loss.
Social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death from all causes and a 50% increase in risk of suffering dementia. Loneliness is also associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide. People suffering from heart failure and loneliness have 4 times the risk of dying, a 68% increase in the risk of hospitalisation, and a 57% increased risk of emergency department visits.
