What is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a group of diseases and conditions that gradually lead to changes and diminished brain function. It is not one specific disease.

Brain impairment can cause decline or changes in memory, language skills, problem-solving abilities, personality, behaviour, mobility and understanding. The hallmark of dementia is the inability to perform routine and everyday activities as a consequence of diminished cognitive ability.

  • Memory loss is the most common early sign of dementia.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the biggest cause of dementia.

Dementia is the number one cause of disability and dependency in Australians aged 65 years or older. More than one million Australians are caring for someone with dementia. Dementia not only affects the individual with the condition, but also has a substantial impact on their families and carers, as people with dementia eventually become dependent on their care providers in most, if not all, areas of daily living.
